Introduction

Who are we?

In Japan, there are many kinds of “えん(en)”. *In Japanese, en means a connection, party, or play. We, a variety entertainment group in Kyoto “En”, connect audiences by enjoyable parties played by our performers. From August 2018, we hold the entertainment show of “和(wa)”. *和(wa), which is a Japanese impression means harmony, is considered as the most typical word which represents Japan.


Stage Your Night in Kyoto. The Japanese traditional performance and sake entertainment will be held this summer at Kawaramachi Nijo presented by En, a variety entertainment group in Kyoto.

Performance

What is “凛(rin)”?

As mentioned above, 和(wa) is considered as the most typical word which represents Japan.
However, 凛(rin), which means shape mind and body, also represents the good old spirit of Japanese people. This performance, named after such word, is not only an entertainment of Japanese traditional performance, but also makes you feel the spirit which has been handed down in the tradition from generation to generation.

Performance Time (the running time is about an hour):

1st stage : OPEN 16:30 START 17:00

2nd stage : OPEN 19:30 START 20:00


Admission Fee (including 1 drink):

ADVANCE TICKET: 3,000 yen (under 18 years old: 1,500 yen)

DAY TICKET: 3,500 yen (under 18 years old: 1,800 yen)

Performers

Hanayura:
(a young women group composed of “koto”, “shakuhachi” and “Nihon Buyo” *koto; a zither-like Japanese musical instrument shakuhachi; a five-holed Japanese vertical bamboo flute Nihon Buyo; a classical Japanese dance )

■Profile:

Be fleetingly beautiful.

Hanayura was named containing the wish to express flowerily the harmony of the traditional Japanese instruments and brilliant dancing.

According to the change of time, we have so little chances to come in contact with the traditional Japanese performing arts today.

Under such circumstances, we have been training from childhood and were organized to make many people feel the traditional Japanese performing arts intimately and value the pride as Japanese.

We are trying not only classic performances but also new trials with a flexible mindset to familiarize and carry on the traditional Japanese performing arts.

 

Past Performances:

さくら (Cherry Blossom): This song is very famous among not only Japanese but also foreign people.

涼流 (Chaste Flow):This is a Hanayura’s original piece composed of koto, shakuhachi and Nihon Buyo.

春の海 (Spring Ocean)…This song is one of the most representative New Japanese Music pieces. The composer wrote it imagining a beautiful landscape of Tomonoura which is a picturesque place in Seto Inland Sea.




SENKIKU

(a group of “tokiwazu ballad”, “nagauta” and dancing

*tokiwazu ballad: style of joruri narrative used for kabuki dances

  nagauta: ballads sung to samisen accompaniment)

Profile:

Senkiku performs not only classic pieces but also collaborations with many kinds of music and musical instruments. They have performed in Paris and held workshops of the traditional Japanese instruments, and in Japan, given children opportunities to experience such instruments in Japan.

 

Past Performances:

samisen: a medley of kabuki music (Kanjincho, Dojoji, Fujimusume, etc.)

nagauta and tokiwazu: Gion Kouta (Song of Gioncho’s four seasons), Four Seasons in Kyoto, etc.

*Kouta is a Japanese ballad accompanied on samisen.

tokiwazu and kabuki buyo: dances appeared in kabuki with samisen

Heisei Osami: samisen solo of popular music in Japanese and Western music




Shizuko Watanabe

(a koto player)



Performance Date:

   August 2018 – 13(Mon) and 14(Tue)

 

Profile:

Shizuko Watanabe has participated in many performances held in China, Singapore, Australia, U.S.A., and other countries from 17 years old. She teaches in several educational institutions and performs at many TV shows and music events. She studied koto, jushichigen and sangen under Kazue Sawai and now teaches in Sawai Koto Institute. She won the Gold Award at the Third National Japanese Music Competition, the Cultural Encouragement Award at the Eleventh NOVYI International Music Competition and the Encouragement Award at the Qualification Examination of Sawai Koto Institute. Besides, she participated in the Hasekenko National Japanese Music Competition and Kenjun National Japanese Music Competition for the final. She exhibits her performances that mainly contains collaborations with many kinds of music instruments in all parts of the world.

Maki Matsuoka

(a painter in abstract)



Performance Date:

August 2018 – 24(Fri), 27(Mon) and 28(Tue)

 

Profile:

Maki Matsuoka is good at the performance drawing abstractly and without preparation. She has held many audience participation performances and proposed a plan in the event that invigorate the local community.

She is exhibiting a series of “Small Abstract Painting”, based on the concept that makes arts more close and easy.

As literally, she draws an abstract picture on the canvas of 6 cm by 4 cm at the minimum.

From March 2018, she started the series of “纏う絵(matou-e)”, which is the works of art done on clothes.

*In Japanese, 纏う(matou) means put on and (e) means a painting.

She gets requests from avant-garde dancers and pop bands to draw on their stage costumes and is making an effort to expand her style that utilize painting to other artistic fields than painting.
